When Gift Giving Goes Bad

Share
Since we develop cruise controls, we need access to the latest car models as soon as they enter the market. So my company has to maintain good relationships with various car dealerships in the area. Whenever a dealership gets a new manager, our application team will pay a visit and take a few promotional products -- golf balls, golf tees, and a large-sized T-shirt with the company's logo -- as a gesture of goodwill.

After this last goodwill mission, our team might start doing a little reconnaissance before handing out those goodies. Last week, when they visited a dealership, they met the new manager -- a 350-pound man who is confined to a wheelchair. This manager looked at the T-shirt could only fit his arm and the supplies for a sport he never plays. Without smiling, he said, "Thanks, guys. I'm going to make good use of these."

And so begins which should be a very interesting relationship...

Hmm, and in personal life, gift-giving very frequently goes bad. In fact, most gifts that are no requested are of little use to the person they are given to. If they are of use to them, they are probably duplicates, since anything they really need and most things they even want they already have.

And supposing they actually want the gift and keep it (rather than passing it on to some other bewildered person) and put it to use, it's an environmental disaster. An item wrapped in today's extra packaging, wrapped in glossy paper and these days placed inside a gift bag. Three layers of packaging, all to give someone something they don't want at a great financial cost to buy and a great environmental cost to manufacture.

Gift giving is really a good thing to do. Even though the gift is small or big, it is still a gift. It is heart warming when the person you gave a gift will thank you. It is a nice feeling.
